Unlike red plant fruits, Ilion's black plant seeds have lost their mobility...mostly. The winged seeds of some pterosperm trees have the ability to flutter short distances before landing, hopefully, in one of the fungus-like pads on a neighboring conspecific. Normally, the pad would fertilize the seed, curl up, and ripen into an edible fruit. However, this seed germinated too early and will probably fail to take root in its present location.

What is this?

June 17, 2013 marked the beginning of the fifth annual 50-50, an art marathon hosted annually by Sanchez Art Center in Pacifica, California. 69 local artists were selected to each create fifty small works of art in fifty days. My chosen theme is "Bioforms," Bic ballpoint pen on Canson "classic cream" drawing paper, 6x6 in. Each will be mounted on a rigid particle board backing. Here I will illustrate scientific concepts and explore the organic forms and patterns found in nature.
