Critical Repairs

Description

Everything here is made from raw materials and found objects. The materials are: super sculpey, acrylic paints, wire of various sizes, duct tape, model railroad grass, a nut, old man's beard, a rubber band, and a stray down feather I decided to leave in.

As for the written component, this passage has been burning a hole in my word document since March. It is, in fact, the first thing I ever wrote for the Odyssey project, though it's gone through a few revisions since then.

Photosensitive

These endless days are disorienting, even after two weeks. No, especially after two weeks. The dark room helps, but my brain isn’t fooled, and besides, there’s barely enough room for all four of us. Last week, it was enough to come back to camp exhausted after a long day on the field. All four of us crashed like racecars each night. Now, though, things are different. I can’t really speak for the other two, but I’ve been getting strong from all the exercise, and therefore don’t crash like I used to, and Luo no longer accompanies us on our excursions at all. He keeps hush on his reasons for staying inside, but I have a hunch that two and a half years on the Odyssey have made him agoraphobic.

We’re going to a brand new place tomorrow. We’ve put off exploring Achilles Wood because of the possible dangers involved, but I think we are ready. I’m looking forward to seeing what life and mystery hides among the giants.

Carbon monoxide alarms went off tonight. A pity, because I was actually sleeping for once. Perhaps helped by the CO? Not exactly the healthiest way to doze off, but I’ll take anything at this point. I could smell ammonia on the air, too. That means air was leaking in from outside, and it was my job to find out why and fix the problem. I’ll spare you the boring details, but it took Rashid and me two and a half hours to fix the filtration system. Naturally, we were working in broad daylight the whole time, despite it being the middle of our night. The damn sun just hung in the sky like a fool, same place as always, refusing to set as usual. It’s nice for navigation, and I’m sure the plants just love it, but dammit, we’re from Earth and we need our photoperiod. At least the ship has a nice dimming effect to simulate sunrise and sunset, which don’t exist on this tidally locked planet. Well, technically they do, but “sunrise” and “sunset” are places, not times. I’d love to go there someday.

So here I am, writing at 4 in the morning, and running out of witty things to say. I sincerely hope we have enough energy to make it through tomorrow’s trip. I’ve given up on sleeping, with only two hours before morning, and critical repair work acting like strong coffee on my nerves (add that to the list of things I miss). It must have had the same effect on Rashid; he’s tossing and turning too. Alex, at least, is sawing logs. Lucky bastard.

I love this project so much!! I could only dream of creating something this expansive and with scientific explanations and interesting, believable characters
Sometimes I like to imagine what would happen if Earth became tidally locked... but I'm totally ignorant about what the climatological effects would be. What helped you predict the biomes/climate regions of Ilion?
