It's finished! I think this is my favorite thing I've done.

The paint is all acrylic (white, black, blue tint, and metallic gold & copper) and floor finish (my favorite glaze). On the shell and horn, I layered on thin, watered down colors and wiped it off to expose deeper layers. I did the opposite with the skin - I painted it gray and dusted the surface with nearly-dry white paint. After it all dried, I took a needle tool to the paint to re-expose some of the wrinkles that were obscured by the layers of paint. It had a really nice weathering effect on the hide.

Go ahead and download for the full view, with more detail than you'll ever need. :)

EDIT: Whoa, a DD! I'm speechless. Thanks to everyone who faved, commented, watched, etc. and to :iconmaryseif: for suggesting it.

A lot of people are asking for dimensions, so here they are:

5 inches to the top of the head
12 inches diagonal from the bottom of the back foot to the tip of the horn

Rhinoceros Beetle - Finished by ~Malicious-Monkey The suggester says: "Absolutely stunning! I can't get over how amazing the details on the head are or how great the shell looks!" A very realistic looking little beetle, indeed! ( Suggested by ~MarySeif and Featured by `LabyrinthCreations )

It's super sculpey, you can buy it in 1 lb ($9 US), 8 lb ($80)or 24 lb ($280) which is a ridiculously huge amount. It's a versatile oven-bake clay that holds a lot of detail and doesn't shrink, highly recommended for anything small enough to fit in an oven, but for anything bigger than your fist or containing a lot of spindly parts, you'll need to build it around a wire armature. Here's an excellent tutorial by a professional concept artist on how to work with the stuff. [link]

That's one awesome sculpture. I could never make something like this (I don't have the patience and skill). I love the incredible level of detail (especially the skin looks amazing). I would love to have such a sculpture. Thumbs up!
